Izzy didn't really like talking to the admins. Hell, he hated talking to anyone who'd been in Rocket longer than he had. There was a weird power balance that made everything feel gross and wrong. He did it, obviously, if he needed to, and he would shut up and put his head down and do whatever they told him to do without question or hesitation.[break][break]

The fact that he did that, though, was what made things so weird. Izzy hated feeling like he was owned by someone else, but the fact of the matter was that he was very much owned by Rocket. It's why he avoided them when he could, didn't speak to or about them if he had a choice.[break][break]

Yet here he was, stood outside of Martín del Mar 's office door, knocking. Delving headfirst into the belly of the beast that he avoided like the plague.[break][break]

It was a clean knock, once - tap, twice - tap. It came from a man on a mission, however much said man wished he could just go curl up at home, instead. Izzy had done his research, both on Mars and on the carrot seeds he'd won at Halloween, and had a conversation he wished to broach.

Manila folders lie stacked upon the desk, ten or perhaps maybe even fifteen of them. A single one is open, the information kept within it being meticulously read before notes are typed on an all too silent keyboard. It’s quiet in the office, relaxing, and purposefully so – the only sound perhaps being the gentle snoring of a Persian that naps near the door.

Until recently it wouldn’t have been this way, but in the past few months much has changed.

The round ears of the feline twitch, the sound of approaching footsteps waking it from its slumber, and before the grunt even knocks upon the door, the Persian’s crimson gaze is already fixed on it.

Tap. Tap.

Amber eyes look towards the door as well, brows furrowing just so slightly before the folder is closed and placed back on the pile where it belongs. The admin approaches the door then, opening it to find no other than Izydor Baranowski.

”Yes? Do you need something?”

Despite the immediate question, his tone is calm, as is his expression.

Mars opens the door and stares down at him, driving images of circling vultures and sharks into Izzy's mind. He's tempted to look away, but he knows well enough that an admin's office on the sub is one of the worst places to become submissive.[break][break]

"Yes, sir. I was wondering if I could run an idea by you"[break][break]

The moment Izzy most often remembered when he thought of Mars was the skill with which he commanded the Rapidash on their decline of Mt. Pyre, like it was the easiest thing in the world. If you'd have asked Izzy to ride a horse down a mountain, both him and the hose would probably have to be put down afterwards. But for Mars? Just another day, easy as breathing.[break][break]

When he'd realised the kinds of legends that carrots planted in ghostly areas had around them, it was oh-so-natural that his mind had thought of Mars. Izzy wasn't the kind of person who should own majestic beasts or living legends. But admin del Mar? He was something of a living legend himself, no?

Meetings are no rarity to him. Not as the CEO of Piazza Oro Grande Bank, and given that business relations happens to be the main task assigned to him, also not as one of Team Rocket’s admins. Still, he’s the one who usually calls for them, and having a grunt knock on his door asking to “run something by him” is rather unexpected.

”Alright, I have a few minutes to spare. Come in.”

’Make it quick,’ is how his words could be interpreted, but Mars has never been one to be that brash. There’s no need to be rude while keeping things professional, after all – that would just be detrimental to him.

When he steps away from the door, the Persian stares at Izydor, Mars paying the cat little mind while going back to sit at his desk just as he had a moment ago. There’s a couple of spare chairs, both of them matching and comfortable, and nodding towards one of them, the admin looks at the grunt once more.

With just a few minutes to spare, Izzy heads straight in so as to not waste any more of the admin's time, taking a seat on a chair as directed. He tries to fight off the intensity of the cat's stare, forcing himself to hold gaze with Mars as he should.[break][break]

"I just wanted to ask you something. Or... I suppose, just... double check" He clears his throat and thinks for a moment. "You know a lot about horses, right? Since you have that Rapidash, and all that."

It’s a question that perhaps could be perceived as coming out of the blue, but also one that sparks one too many memories for the admin. Memories of childhood days at his family’s stables, memories of horse riding lessons, memories of being forced to attend those annual Rapidash races the Marzáns are so very proud of, and even memories of that one afternoon at Mt. Pyre with Izydor Baranowski.

His assessment is accurate, of course.

”Hmm…You could say that. Why? Are you having trouble with training some kind of horse pokémon?”

Had Izydor come all the way here to ask for his advice? That's even more surprising that whatever speculations had crossed Mars’ mind, and undeniably so, it means that this must be important to him.

It makes Mars curious, and he holds the younger man’s gaze as he awaits an answer.

Izzy sits for an few quiet moments as he recounts in his mind the strange week he's had. Sleepless nights, constant thoughts of the creature on the mountain. Spectrier, he now knows it as, calling him to it again and again. Like something out of some old fairy tale.[break][break]

"I found a pokémon - or, well, I caught it. I don't think..." He chews the words for a second before letting them out "...I just don't think I'm the right kind of trainer for it. It's... powerful. Something that you could-- eh, you could probably put to use. For rocket, and all that"[break][break]

He pulls the luxury ball from his bag and gently puts it on the desk, closer to Mars than to himself. He hates that gaze that the admin stares down at him with, like a hungry shark.[break][break]

"...Spectrier. Shiny, too, I think"

A gift? An offering? Is Izydor Baranowski as if a devout and god-fearing child standing at an altar in hopes of earning the favour of his patron of choice? That would be ridiculous, and yet it’s a sentiment that matches both the boy’s demeanour and words….

What’s the goal here? Mars himself may have come to care for Rocket’s ideals to a certain extent, but he’s not deluded enough not to know that most of the members at Izydor Baranowski’s level are here mostly out of self-preservation and nothing else. He can respect that. He can respect joining Rocket for their obvious resources and strength. But, what he cannot respect is someone being unclear about their wishes…

Mars looks at the Luxury Ball so alike those he often uses, watching it for a short moment before turning to look at Izydor once more.

”You’d give me a legendary pokémon and ask for nothing in return?” Thoughts come to mind of conversations once had about ghostly equines, memories of seeing Alexandra Briarwood riding atop her own Spectrier’s back when Rocket ventured into the Tree of Life. Of course Mars, given his fondness for horses, had entertained the thought of having one of his own more than once, but…

He sighs, lightly leaning back on his chair.

”I could pay you handsomely for it, you know?”

It would be in his benefit to just take it, and Mars is never one to turn away a good deal, but is he perhaps looking out for a boy who clearly doesn’t understand the worth of what he just offered? Is it perhaps because, to some degree, Izydor’s wellbeing matters? Is it because he’s a part of Team Rocket? Is it because Mars is somewhat fond of him?

Like the sailor dropping young girls into the riptides to ward off the wrath of the kraken before sail. Was Spectrier his virginal gift? Was Martín del Mar his terror of the depths? El demonio del Mar.[break][break]

"You’d give me a legendary pokémon and ask for nothing in return?"[break][break]

Izzy looks up at him, his fingers finding one another in a way to calm himself slightly. As anxious as he often feels around the admin before him, this isn't as bad as it has been in the past. He was sure of himself, now - he hadn't been, before. So rarely confident, even when taking a walk on Mt. Pyre, but when gifting a creature spoken about in ancient folklore to a man he barely knew... there wasn't a doubt in his mind.[break][break]

"I know you could, but I..." I don't want any more blood money from Rocket. "...I want to earn my own money. It wouldn't feel right to get that from... from Spectrier. It was kind to me, so I want to... return the favour."[break][break]

His gaze drifts again to the ball in admin del Mar's hand. Inside it lies the horse that had haunted his dreams and yet calmed his mind. Maybe it was a lesson he had to learn, and Spectrier had to teach it to him.[break][break]

"...I think it deserves to go with someone who knows what to do with it. Like you, admin."

Kindness. Such a silly thing. Silly, yet found all too often even in an organisation that’s full of criminals. Even in Mars himself, when it comes to certain people.

He knows this well, and because he does, he doesn’t look down upon Izydor Baranowski’s wishes, but he still can’t help but wonder if the grunt realises what he’s actually giving up, and if he won’t regret it once some time has passed.

”The road to hell is paved with good intentions,” Mars could tell him, but instead of doing so, he simply looks at him, quietly listening to his explanation as to why he thinks he’s doing the right thing. Listen. Even if he may disagree, even if he will always do as he pleases, he will listen.

”Alright, I’ll make sure Spectrier is well cared for.”
[break][break]
There’s no lie to his words, nor is Izydor wrong: Mars definitely knows what to do with a pokémon like that and will put it to good use. After getting to know it, that is. After seeing if he can actually work with it. Still, he has every confidence that he will.

”Is there anything you want me to know about it?... What it likes?”
[break][break]
It would be helpful for the sake of gaining Spectrier’s trust, but he’s not asking just because of that.

Would he regret it in time? Maybe. Maybe the Spectrier would draw him back into sleepless nights forever at the slight of being handed off to a stranger, and maybe Izzy would deeply miss it's presence in the back of his mind. But he also didn't feel comfortable or confident enough to have it at his side like his other pokémon were - it was too much to cope with.[break][break]

Instead, he could quite easily trade it off to Admin del Mar, and maybe on the odd day or so get a chance to say hello again. Just something quick and simple like that would please him well enough.[break][break]

"Thank you, sir" Izzy nods once, politely, then scans his eyes over the curve of the ball he'd just handed over.[break][break]

"He... likes carrots. If you can get them, the... shade-y ones. He doesn't like you riding him unless you warm him up first, like - gain his trust. He likes berries... um, I found he likes the spicy ones." He lists off a few things he remembers about his time with Spectrier, with the tiniest of smiles decorating the corners of his lips. It was sad but sweet to see the legendary go - like sending a kid off to college.[break][break]

"...would I... be able to see him, sometimes? Not often - I know you're busy. Maybe just once a year or something..."
